Jeff Boller Wins Ray Zone Award for "A Geek like Me"
Jeff Boller created the stereoscopic 3D video "A Geek Like Me" with 4,418 sheets of paper and a lot of pencils. It took approximately a year to make, from storyboards to final cut. It won the Ray Zone Award for Excellence in 3-DIY and was in the official selection at the 10th Annual LA 3D Movie Festival in December 2013. “It took on average ten minutes to draw each picture,” he says. “Add that up and I spent one month straight last year doing nothing but drawing.”

A Geek Like Me
Musician Jeff Boller of Greensburg (PA, USA), who releases music under the moniker The Simple Carnival, took up 3D animation to create a 40-minute film companion to his album Smitten. That particular project, however, is still a work in progress. “I wanted a visual companion to the music on the album, and I've always loved 3D movies,” he says. “I knew this project would be a lot of work, but it's led to many interesting experiences.” A software engineer by trade, he has been writing the computer programs he needs for 3D animation as he goes along.
Ray Zone Award for Excellence in 3-DIY
Named for festival co-founder Ray "3D" Zone, who passed away in 2012, the award celebrates what Zone described as “fiercely independent do-it-yourself 3-D filmmaking.”
Boller received a copy of Ray Zone’s book 3-DIY, published by Focal Press in 2012, Sony Vegas Pro 12 Suite from Sony Creative Software and Stereo Toolbox LE software from Dashwood Cinema Solutions.
The 10th Annual LA 3D Movie Festival
The festival’s mission is to showcase the best independent stereoscopic 3D filmmaking from around the world. This year’s fest took place on Dec 13th-15th, 2013, at the Downtown Independent theater in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Awards were presented at the Closing Night Ceremony by festival director and LA 3D Club president Eric Kurland. Top films were selected by audience ballot. Award winners were presented with the traditional "Ro-Man" trophy of the LA 3-D Club and an assortment of valuable prizes from festival sponsors.
The festival marked the inaugural presentation of the Ray Zone Award for Excellence in 3-DIY. “I was honored to be the first recipient of the award that bears Ray Zone's name. Ray championed the do-it-yourself spirit, and his contributions to the 3D world are an inspiration to anyone who aspires to make good 3D art,” states Boller.
