Flight of the Butterflies Available on 4K and 3D Blu-ray

"Flight of the Butterflies" was released in stereoscopic IMAX 3D four years ago. This extraordinary documentary about the monarch buterflies migration is now published in a three-discs 4K2D - 2K3D - 2K2D combo box. Pre-order is possible right now with a delivery date of July 12, 2016.

The Story

The monarch butterfly is a true marvel of nature, Weighing less than a penny, it makes one of the longest migrations on Earth. Follow the monarchs' perilous journey and experience millions of them in remote mountain peaks of Mexico. Be captivated by the story of an intrepid scientist's 40 year search to find their secret hideway.

The Technology

The film was shot with a variety of high-resolution image capturing technologies that includedIMAX® 15/70 film, IMAX® Phantom 4K digital, Red Epic 5.6k digital and Nikon D3X digitalcameras.Since the film is to be exhibited on a wide variety of platforms, including IMAX® 15/70 3D filmtheaters, the highest resolution possible was required. The flexibility offered by digital (bothfixed and shifting interocular capabilities) was also desired in order to capture behavior in thefield.Academy Award® winner Peter Parks, whose credits include The Tree of Life &Bugs!, designeda prototype 3D “snorkel optics” lens system to capture the stunning macro shots featured inFlight of the Butterflies in 3D.

Stereographer and DOP: Simon de Glanville

An award winning cameraman, Simon has been involved in 3D filmmaking for over a decade. He began his career in the late 1990s, working under the apprenticeship of the Oscar-winning Peter Parks OBE, and was intimately involved in the production of the IMAX film Bugs! 3D. Simon has increasingly married his background in zoology and wildlife filmmaking with his expertise in stereography. Recently, he has worked on various 3D natural history projects, including Flight of the Butterflies in 3D, Kingdom of Plants 3D, Enchanted Kingdom, and Galapagos 3D.
