3D Musicals not Just for the Kids

What Justin Bieber, Michael Jackson and Katy Perry have in common?

With ticket-price inflation, 3-D premiums and the unstoppable killing machines that are studios' integrated promotional apparatuses, Justin Bieber, "Glee," Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers have all recently bopped their way to the top. Bieber's "Never Say Never" stands as the all-time top grosser domestically with $73 million; Michael Jackson's posthumous "This Is It" easily beat it worldwide with a thrilling $261 million. Katy Perry, haunter of many a teenage dream, releases her first 3-D concert movie/documentary, "Part of Me," on July 5, 2012...

Then Neil Young stars in the hybrid road movie/concert flick "Neil Young Journeys" on July 6, 2012.

Why such a success for 3D musicals?

It may seem surprising that the genre is thriving when the formula hasn't changed much - live performances intercut with backstage footage, interviews, lots of adoring-fan shots - and the music industry continues to founder in the digital tide. Than answer could be partly economic. With the top 10 current music tours coming with an average ticket price of $60, even premium 3-D movie tickets are only a quarter of the price.
