Create 3D Depth Maps with DMAG11b - Improve Them With DMAG4
A depth map is a black-and-white image that contains information relating to the distance of the surfaces of scene objects from a viewpoint. Dark pixels means the objet is far away, bright pixels means the object is close (or vice-versa). To convert a 2D image into any 3D stereoscopic format, you have to create a good depth map first. What is DMAG11b?
DMAG11b is a tool that can be used to improve the quality of depth maps. Given a reference rgb image and an input depth map, DMAG11b detects pixels where the depth is unreliable and makes the depth at that pixel transparent in the output depth map. In turn, the output depth map can be fed to DMAG4, DMAG9, or DMAG11 (the programs used for 2d to 3d image conversion) which will fill the transparent pixels for hopefully a better depth map we started with. What is DMAG4?
DMAG4 is a tool used to "densify" a sparse depth map using so-called random walks. Depths are propagated along areas of similar colors, a bit like a joint bilateral filter. DMAG4 is typically used to convert 2D images into 3D scenes via the "densication" of a sparse depth map where key depths have been painted using the pencil tool (hard-edge brush) in Gimp or Photoshop. What Can you Do with a Depth Map?
