PFDepth from The Pixel Farm adds Z to 2D pictures
The Pixel Farm (Marden, UK) presented PFDepth at IBC this week. PFDepth is a new, fully integrated toolset for total scene reconstruction, depth map creation and 2D-to-3D conversion. PFDepth is a radical evolution of the intricate processes involved in accurately representing the perceived geometric shape and depth of objects, buildings and terrain in 3D, making it easy to build complex geometry, detailed per-pixel depth maps, and stereoscopic renders of any 2D scene.
PFDepth is truly unique
PFDepth uses real-world camera models based on The Pixel Farm’s renowned 3D camera tracking technology. Thanks to these models, accurate depth cues are assigned to each pixel in the image relative to the real-world camera’s position over time, while dynamic adjustments to convergence can be animated automatically. The result is scene reconstruction and stereoscopy that appears as true to life as the original environment in which it was shot.
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones 3D Release Date
Georges Lucas himself appeared at the Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando, FL, USA that was ending yesterday August 26, 2012. And he announced the release dates for the next two Star Wars stereoscopic movies: "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones 3D" and "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 3D".
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones 3D: September 20th, 2013
- Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 3D: October 13th, 2013
Virtual Set Better than Depth Map for 3D Conversion?
Conventional methods of conversion generally use a process called displacement mapping, a 2D technique where the outline of an object is used to push its shape forward in space, creating a pixel shift in the left and right eye according to values in a "depth map", a black-and white picture where brigthness is converted into distance from the camera. The other method is to recreate the scene in 3D CGI and wrap the colored texture from the 2D image on the CGI objects, a method pioneered by Gener8 (Vancouver, Canada).
Gener8’s COO, Tim Bennison, says the resulting 3D effect from the displacement method “...often appears embossed, similar to a popup book due to the inaccurate relationships in space between objects in the scene, and incorrect outlines around objects”.
Gener8 developed the G83D technology allowing them to reconstruct a virtual 3D set of the environment, actors and effects. Next, G83D animates virtual stereo cameras and projects the original shot onto the virtual set.
G83D takes the guesswork out of spatial relationships and means that complex visual effects and hair shots have natural volume and depth, with no artifacts.
work includes top tier feature films such as 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader', 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' and 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance'.
Blue Lightning 3D offer Blu-ray 3D discs from Sep 12, 2012
Blue Hemisphere 3D announced this month their entry into the 2D to 3D conversion and distribution market, under the brand Blue Lightning 3D. They are acquiring 2D films to be converted in-house, then will release 3D titles focused in the Action, Science Fiction, and Horror genres.
