Lucas's Red Tails, a 2D film with 3D sound
"Red Tails", the last child of Georges Lucas is a 2D film with 3D sound. Released on January 20, 2012, Red Tails is the first movie in Barco's "Auro-3D" 11.1 sound format in the few happy theaters already fitted with this revolutionary new sound system.
Scoop of the day : George Lucas is retiring from the movie business ! Details here under.
Most theaters use 5.1 or 7.1 audio, with three speakers in front, two on the side, and two in the back. 11.1 changes that up by putting upa second set of speakers at the ceiling level in order to reproduce the vertical audio dimension. Since Red Tails depicts intense aerial combat, it’s an ideal candidate to enjot the 11.1 system. It’s important to note that while the audio system is called “Auro-3D”, it’s only creating a 3D audio mix. Visually, Red Tails will be released in 2D only.
Having been at several Auro-3D demos, we can say that Auro-3D sound is worth taking a plane to L.A. to see and hear Red Tails ! The 2D trailer here under has only stereo sound however.
Barco’s Brian Claypool explains their innovative system is different from conventional theater surround sound:“Auro-3D is the next logical step in sound to usher in the ultimate immersive, premium cinema experience. Auro-3D can impact a viewer’s emotional connection by expanding the 2D plane of surround sound into a fully natural 3D sound experience. By strategically placing speakers in the upper portion of the auditorium, supplementing existing 5.1 installations, Auro-3D audio adds a dimension of height. Traditional surround sound systems do not accurately reproduce the dimension of height we experience in the real world.”
Auro-3D is backward compatible with the DCI-compliant 5.1 sound system. Thanks to some clever math trickery, the 11.1 sound information is encoded in a standard 5.1 sound stream. The Octopus codec developed by Galaxy Studios (download the Octopus codec PDF white paper) extract the high-channels sound in the theatre. A non-equipped theatre will just ignore the extra information and play a standard 5.1 sound. This magical encoding will allow for a single 5.1 sound file to be distributed while rendering sound in 3D in theaters equiped with the Berco Auro-3D decoder.

George Lucas retiring from Hollywood
The Star Wars director, 67, made the announcement in an interview to the New York Times, where he spoke of Hollywood bosses rejecting his latest film, Red Tails. "I'm retiring," he said. "I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff." The filmmaker said he would only work on a fifth Indiana Jones film before he calls it a day. Otherwise, Red Tails, which he financed himself, will be his last blockbuster.
The US director said Hollywood bosses rejected Red Tails, directed by black filmmaker Anthony Hemingway, because they could not understand how to market it. Rear the eye-opening paper here in AToast2Wealth.
