Glasses-free Full HD 3D TV May Be Closer Than You Think
Zecotek Photonics Inc. today announced that its subsidiary Zecotek Display Systems Pte. Ltd. is demonstrating patented 3D display technology to major electronics companies in its lab in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This is maybe the first demo of a working Glasses-free 3D HDTV prototype that works. With 90 different parallax views, this TV should display 3D images in Full HD with great comfort for several viewers located in a 90° wide sector in front of the screen.
A commercial product seems more and more possible in a few years time, so Zecotek is already in discussions with certain major electronics companies to co-develop an OLED (organic light emitting diode) based, flat screen, glasses-free, true 3D HD television.
A Joint Venture with Hamamatsu
This progress in the Zecotek Display Systems division, follows the recently signed collaborative joint venture agreement between Hamamatsu Photonics of Japan and Zecotek Imaging Systems to market and sell patented imaging technologies. "With the sharp decline in the 3D consumer television market over the past year there is renewed interest in our patented 3D display technology," said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, Chairman, President, and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc.
"Price, combined with concerns about visual health, as well as the overall lack of quality in the current 3D television, have all contributed to a poor consumer market outlook. We have overcome the main technical barriers required to meet the consumer preference for flat screen form factors and HD picture quality with available OLED/LED flat screen display technologies. Our strategy is to partner with industry leading OEMs to commercialize our patented technologies. Renewed discussions are now in progress and we feel confident about reaching a mutually rewarding business arrangement."
Fast OLED Panels Are Key
Current OLED/LED based flat screen display technologies are now meeting higher switching speeds necessary to support Zecotek`s 3D display technology. The Company is actively pursuing major consumer electronics companies to develop a true, glasses-free, stereoscopic HD 3D experience using state-of-the-art fast OLED (organic LED) panels. The application of Zecotek's 3D display system with fast OLED panels will enable a true 3D, HD flat screen display system which could revive the electronics 3D consumer market.
"In November 2011 our white paper on 3D display technology predicted the challenging consumer market place, pointing to the weakness in the 3D systems using special glasses. At the same time, the white paper indicated that once flat screen technologies, OLED in particular, evolved to higher switching speeds, Zecotek's unique display technology would be successfully applied to flat screen formats. This is now happening today," continued Dr. Zerrouk.
Zecotek's 3D Display System is based on the auto-stereoscopic principle, but with substantial innovative and patented improvements and represents a new and unique generation of 3D displays. It has the capability of simultaneously presenting 3D and 2D images on the same screen, and for separate views at different viewing angles.
Zecotek's true, auto-stereoscopic 3D2D display system requires no eyewear and has an effective viewing angle of 40 degrees with 90 concurrent perspectives allowing for multiple views at the same time. Another unique feature of the Zecotek system is constant motion parallax within the viewing angle. Motion parallax eliminates the sense of imbalance and dizziness during normal observation which can occur with polarized and shutter glasses used with other commercial systems.
Furthermore Zecotek's 3D display features the preservation of the base resolution in every perspective view irrespective of the number of such views.
